Manejo de la Información Territorial y Factibilidad para Implementar Sistemas de Información Geográfica en Municipios de Oaxaca, México

Abstract

In 2014, a study related to the importance of spatial information management in municipalities in the state of Oaxaca was performed. While there are studies on the subject in the region, they are in the initial phases; which gives great importance to this study. The importance of this study is that the processes (social, economic, environmental, and their interrelationships) occurring in the municipality are perfectly capable of geospatially locating themselves. The geo-space feature allows information from these processes to be managed and analyzed in such a way that contributes to decision making. Additionally, we suggest that municipalities of the state of Oaxaca, especially those that are remote and marginalized, should implement the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), focusing on two fundamental aspects: The analysis of the elements to be considered for such implementation and the methodology for the management of territorial information, which would allow municipalities to achieve more efficient administration in order to improve the quality of life in the communities. The availability of data and free GIS software which if implemented would enable municipalities to be strengthened, provided that there is a readiness and willingness of those involved. The municipality trial managed to raise awareness of council members and the GIS was implemented.
