The Family: Forgotten Subject as a Care Unit in the Context of the ICU

Nursing is a humanistic and social discipline by nature. Its central focus is the care of the person from a holistic perspective. For this reason, the practice of nursing in the context of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) must change from the biological vision of care to a vision of integration, where the family is seen as a set of contextualized beings in the universe of the hospitalized person. This research addresses the situation that the hospitalized person’s family lives in the ICU, from the qualitative approach. To collect the data, techniques and instruments of qualitative orientation were used. These were: participant observation, field notes and semi-structured interviews. Microanalysis tecnique by grounded theory was used to analyze the data. Data from the interviews was analyzed line by line by a method of reading and re-reading. It was concluded that the main problem is the fragmented relationship between the nurse and the family.
