Organotropism of Metastatic Breast Cancer in Patients from Veracruz

Introduction: Organotropism refers to the tendency of malignant tumor cells to metastasize to specific distant organs. In breast cancer, organotropism may be influenced by molecular subtype. Objective: To describe the organotropism of distant metastases in patients from Veracruz with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Materials and Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted using medical records of MBC patients treated at two hospitals in Xalapa, Veracruz, between 2015 and 2023. Results and Discussion: A total of 269 clinical records were analyzed. The most frequent site of organotropism was bone (n=175, 42.6%), followed by lung (n=119, 29.0%). The contralateral breast was the least frequently affected site (n=7, 1.7%). Molecular subtype was significantly associated with metastasis site (p = 0.006). Patients with Luminal subtypes and bone metastases had better overall survival compared to those with visceral metastases (p< 0.001). Conclusions: In patients from Veracruz with MBC, bone is the most frequent site of organotropism. The Luminal A subtype appears to have a particular predilection for bone metastases. These patients also showed better overall survival.
