Correlation between Suicides and Intentional Homicides in Mexico (2015-2020)

Abstract

Introduction: Introduction. This study examines the interrelationship between self-inflicted violent behaviour (suicide) and behaviour directed towards others (intentional homicide) in Mexico. The study was conducted using official statistical databases (INEGI), supplemented by a theoretical review of violence and Spielberger’s Trait-State Anger Theory. Methodology. Using statistical correlation analysis, Spearman’s correlation test (Rho) was performed, obtaining a significance level (p< .05). The significance level between the suicide rate and the intentional homicide rate in Mexico in 2015 and 2020 was estimated. Results. There is a negative correlation with an inversely proportional trend, without reaching a level of statistical significance between suicide and homicide rates. In the case of Spielberger’s Trait- State Anger Theory, although it does not explain dysfunctional emotional expressions at the collective level, it allows us to understand the manifestation of anger in individual processes, either internally, through somatisation or suicidal behaviour, or externally, through insults, destruction or homicide. Conclusion. The results demonstrate the importance of adopting preventive approaches that address both suicide and homicide in order to reduce violence in society, mitigate risk factors, and promote emotional regulation, social support, and community safety.
