Abstract

One way to enhance the accuracy of medical procedures, particularly in anesthesia, is through automation. This involves representing the patient and the infusion pump, including their input and output variables, and selecting an appropriate controller to determine the precise amount of medication, thereby reducing human error. The innovation in this work lies in the use of linear Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, known for their simplicity and robustness. This methodology distinguishes itself from previous research by prioritising accessible and practical solutions that can be directly implemented in clinical settings, optimising both safety and accuracy. Several linear PI controller gains designed for this system are presented, evaluating their performance and their ability to improve the precision of anesthetic administration across different patient populations. The results not only provide a theoretical framework but also contribute to optimising empirical procedures in surgical contexts, enhancing patient safety and treatment effectiveness.
