The Use of Psychoactive Substances and Quality of Life Among Adolescents in School

Abstract

Objective. This study aims to establish the relationship between problematic substance use and the quality of  life of adolescents in the City of Catamarca, Argentina. Method. The Student Quality of Life Index (Índice de Calidad de Vida Estudiantil ICVE) was designed by the author as the measurement tool. A quantitative methodology was employed, using logistic regression analysis to identify predictive factors and behavioural patterns within the student population. Data were obtained from the Planet Youth Survey, conducted in 2022 by the General Directorate of Human Development of the Municipality of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, involving students from 40 secondary schools. Results. The analysis identified that the consumption of coca leaves, opiates, and glue were the most significant variables in the model, being associated with a lower quality of life. Other substances which were evaluated showed a lower risk, and no statistically significant differences could be detected. Conclusions. Promoting healthy and supportive school and community environments is crucial for reducing problematic substance use and improving the quality of life of adolescents in the region.
