Abstract

Correct nutrition during the first two years of life is essential for the full and integral development of the human being. At 6 months of age, in addition to breast milk, children should be offered other types of food. In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) called this process Complementary Feeding (CA), referring to any liquid or solid food other than breast milk that is introduced into the child’s diet. In order for it to be carried out correctly, it is important to take into account various aspects such as biological, psychological, social, cultural, sensory and a correct interpretation of hunger and satiety signals, together with how, when, where and who will carry out such action. This will promote an optimal environment between the mother and the infant, which leads to a perceptual CA, that is, the mother applies the principles of psychosocial care. The components of this diet are: age of onset, diversity of flavors, quantities, frequency of exposure, frequency of introduction, texture according to the approach, sensory integration and finally the variety of foods.
