Sleep Quality in Nursing Students at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro

Abstract

Introduction. Sleep quality is a fundamental aspect of people’s health and well-being, playing a crucial role in their academic performance and in their daily lives. For students, in particular, adequate sleep is essential as it directly influences their ability to concentrate, retain information, and cope with academic demands. Objetive. Identify the quality of sleep in students of the Nursing Degree at the Autonomous University of Querétaro. Method. Quantitative-observationaldescriptive- cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire was applied, which consists of 19 self-administered items. The sample size was calculated with a formula for a finite population, obtaining a total of 127 students, non-probabilistic sampling for convenience. The data were processed with IBM SPSS version 25 software. Results. Of 127 students studied, 86.6% of participants obtained a score greater than 5, classifying them as “bad sleepers”; women have a significantly worse quality of sleep than men, with 75.6% being “bad sleepers; 39.4% of students sleep 5 to 6 hours per night and 33.1% sleep less than 5 hours. Conclusion. There is the need to implement preventive measures and early interventions to address sleep problems in this student population where poor sleepers predominated, with the aim of improving both their general well-being and their academic performance and future clinical practice.
