Abstract

Introduction. Covid-19 affected a significant number of older adults in the municipality of Songo-La Maya. Therefore, the scientific problem was raised: What will be the impact of Covid-19 on the health of the elderly in the Songo-La Maya municipality? Objective. To characterize the impact of Covid-19 on the health of older adults in the Songo-La Maya municipality, period from January-December 2021. Method. A descriptive study was conducted; the universe and sample was made up of 287 older adults diagnosed with Covid-19. The research presented was based on the following methods: participatory observation, medical interview, clinical laboratory results; through the quantitative research methodology and under the paradigm of positivism. Results. The largest number of patients affected by the disease were female (56.1 %) who were between 60-69 years old. Fever (29.9%) was identified as the most frequent symptom, followed by cough and respiratory distress. Severe pneumonia (70%) was the greatest complication presented in patients, followed by respiratory distress and pulmonary thrombus embolism in the 70-79 age group. Conclusions. Taking into account the impact of Covid-19 on the health of the older adults investigated, it would be of vital importance to implement health strategies that help mitigate the morbidity and mortality of this group in relation to another epidemic. The scientific community is invited to investigate the possible relationships between: covid-19, older adults and mental health.
