Family area and anxiety as risk factors for university school permanence

Abstract

Introduction. At all levels of education, student withdrawal, or dropout, is a common social issue. Causes for student dropout can be socio-demographic, cultural and familial in nature. For this reason, the goal of this research was to analyze how family is a risk factor for school retention. Method. A descriptive comparative study was conducted with the participation of 408 students who had enrolled for the bachelor’s program in psychology at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. The level of anxiety experienced by students who had gone through situations such as parental divorce or domestic violence was compared to the level of anxiety experienced by those who had not these situations. Results. The level of anxiety in the population studied tended to increase with the presence of situations of domestic violence or parental divorce. Conclusion. Familiar factors such as living situations that included violence or parental divorce are elements that have an impact on the emotional state of children, leading to the development of anxiety disorders, also, these elements are also a risk factor for staying in school.
