Terminal Chronic Kidney Disease with Hemodialysis: Ananalysis of Costs Associated with it Streatment in Mexico

Abstract

Mexico is in a demographic and epidemiological transition in which the population is aging and chronic non-communicable diseases are increasing / growing more prevalent. One such disease is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Cases of CKD have been catastrophic because their treatment requires a large number of physical, financial and human resources that are limited. Although there are no official data on the number of patients suffering CKD or the number of those patients who also undergo renal replacement therapy, the prevalence of the disease is estimated at 813 cases per million inhabitants. Previous studies estimated the direct cost of hemodialysis (HD). The direct cost included diagnosis, medical care, and laboratory fees, whereas indirect costs included transportation and food, among others. During the analysis of costs, the price catalog from the Ministry of Health was referenced. A cost projection was made for 5 years into the future, factoring in an annual increase that is presented in the price catalog. It is important to note that in these calculations omit the cost of hospitalizations because the number of times a person with hemodialysis is hospitalized and the length of the hospital process cannot be exactly known. These past studies concluded that CKD was a public health problem based on how widespread it was among the population, its complications in addition to the aforementioned costs.
