Experiences in the use of Biosafety Measures in Nursing Students

Abstract

Introduction. One of the challenges worldwide today is patient safety. For this reason, various measures have been planned, outlined and implemented in order to prevent and control the spread of diseases and infections. Objective. To identify the experiences of nursing students and their use of biosafety measures. Methodology. A cross-sectional, descriptive, exploratory study was carried out among nursing students at the Autonomous University of Querétaro. Sampling for convenience. A form of sampling was applied through Google Forms, an online survey application. The data collection tool was created by the researchers and subjected to a validation process. It consisted of 4 sections: sociodemographic data, experiences, attitudes and practices. The data were processed using descriptive statistics and averages. Ethical aspects of research in humans suggested by the General Law of Health Law were considered. Results. Of 55 students that were surveyed, the average age was 23.55; 85.5% are women. 50.9% of the students concluded that their experience with biosafety measures within the clinical field had been good, while 29.1% of the students considered personal protectiveequipment uncomfortable when carrying out their activities. 49.1% of the students observed that the biosafety measures were adequate for the protocol. Conclusion. Nursing students’ education and training, together with good professional internships and other experience, increase the likelihood of biosafety measures being applied correctly.
