Abstract

Introduction. Diabesity is when both diabetes and obesity occur simultaneously. Around the world, the number of people with diabesity is rising every day, and an even steeper climb is expected in the future. This growth in diabesity could have a detrimental effect on both the economy as well as personal health, public health, and healthcare systems. To fully understand the diabesity phenomenon, different factors should be analyzed. In this thesis, two theories will be presented to explain how the disease is manifested: the energy efficiency gene theory, and the social genes theory which will delve into how such genes are developed in an obesogenic environment. Conclusion. Diabesity is a complex, multi-etiological phenomenon, that stems from individual physiological conditions and conditions in the social context.
