Nursing: From Occupation to Profession, from Profession to Science

The political, social and cultural problems that have last years arisen in Mexico have made us reflect today about Nursing as a profession, which is accepted and clear among the labor union; however, for other disciplines, there are arguments that indicate that Nursing is exempt from being a full and socially recognized profession because it does not meet all the requirements, but what are those requirements? Do nurses know them to argue in favor? Undoubtedly the political, social, economic and health contexts have influenced on the professionalization of this discipline, however, the nursing knowledge evolution indicates it perfectly not only as a profession, but also as a scientific discipline. Based on the review and analysis of different authors, this article aims to reflect on the arguments to recognize Nursing as a profession and even as a scientific discipline, despite being still considered by some sectors as a profession in transition.
