Strategic Management, Productivity Gap and Concentration of Physical Assets: The Panorama of MIPyMES in Mexico, 2009-2015

Abstract

This paper investigates whether or not MIPyMES carry out strategic management for productivity and competitiveness in globalized markets with rapid and unstable changes. Both cross-sectional and time series data show the importance of MSMEs in the Mexican economy. Through the evidence of productivity, and the results of research by authors on the subject, it is concluded that MIPyMES either do not perform strategic management, or they apply it halfway or intuitively. Productivity gaps between MIPyMES, as well as the high concentration of physical assets in decile X (the rich or high-income decile) of large companies seem to explain the low economic growth, as well as social and regional inequalities. In the end, questions are raised for discussion.
