Parkinson’s Disease: General And Nutritional Aspects

Introduction: In Mexico, Parkinson’s disease has an incidence of 40 to 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and is more common in men. This disease is a neurodegenerative, chronic and progressive disorder of the central nervous system characterized by reduced and slowed movements, stiffness, tremors and postural instability. These alterations can affect from the jaw to the tongue, which can cause problems from dysphagia and bronchial aspiration to lower digestive tract conditions such as reflux, gastroparesis and intestinal slowing, which can all result in malnutrition. Objective: To review the updated information available in scientific publications aimed at understanding and treating Parkinson’s disease. Method: A literature review was conducted in different databases such as MedicLatina and Google Scholar, as well as on the internet during the period from August 2017 to July 2018, on the most relevant aspects of the last 20 years pertaining pertaining to Parkinson’s disease. Conclusion: The incidence of this disease is increasingly frequent, so it is important to gather and disseminate information about the treatment and nutritional approach to be taken into account for these patients in order to help them cope with the symptoms and improve their quality of life.
