The Social Protection System in Healthcare: An Analysis Proposal of Equity in Maternal Health

Abstract

Introduction: The Social Protection System in Health constitutes the deepest structural transformation of the Mexican healthcare system in decades as a driving force toward quality, equity, and financial justice. Objective: This paper aims to achieve an analysis proposal to address social inequity in maternal health. Conclusion: The picture of maternal health plays a key role in the improvement of healthcare systems and sustainable development goals. The access to equitable and quality maternal care is an indicator of a country’s success in the face of social inequalities in healthcare. Inequity in maternal health can be analyzed through three main dimensions: pre-natal care, care during childbirth, and maternal mortality. Combining these dimensions with stratifying factors (wealth, geographical region, education, membership, and use of services) can reveal the main social determiners behind inequity in maternal health.
