The Prevalence of Depression in Pregnant Women in a First Level Health Institution
Keywords:

Pregnancy and motherhood are events in a woman’s life that involve changes in the way she lives. Depression is a common condition during pregnancy and a risk factor for postpartum depression. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of depression in pregnant women in a first level institution. The study was descriptive, with simple random probability sampling. A personal data-card and the Beck Inventory (BDI-II) were applied. The results show that the age range associated with the most depression was 16 to 20 years. Common-law relationships were also shown to have the highest number of depressed pregnant women. Depression was prevalent in 23,6% of pregnant women, of which 19,1% were in the first trimester, 14,3% in the second trimester and 66,6% in the third trimester of pregnancy.
